SINGAPORE – A 31-year-old man was arrested after the car he was driving crashed into a bollard at Funan mall in the early morning of June 24.
The police said they were alerted to the accident involving the car, a truck and a taxi at 6.55am that day at the popular shopping mall in North Bridge Road.
The driver of the car was arrested for drink driving and other traffic-related offences. The truck driver, 61, is also assisting with investigations, said police.
An eyewitness who wished to remain anonymous told Chinese-language daily Lianhe Zaobao that the car, a Mercedes-Benz, was involved in a collision with the truck before it spun and hit a bollard at Funan’s taxi stand and a cab that was there.
Photos of the aftermath of the accident show the bonnet of the Mercedes badly damaged. It had sprung open and parts of the car’s bumper had fallen off.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force said a person was assessed for minor injuries but declined to be taken to hospital.
Fatal road accidents jumped to 131 in 2023, from 104 in 2022, with the 2023 figure surpassing pre-pandemic levels.
The Traffic Police’s annual statistics report also showed a rise in the number of fatal accidents involving speeding, drink driving and running red lights.
