SINGAPORE – A 33-year-old man will be charged on Aug 27 after he was involved in a hit-and-run accident on Aug 20 leading to the death of a tow truck driver.
The man, who was driving a rental car, was earlier arrested for dangerous driving causing death, said the police on Aug 26.
He had been involved in an accident with a tow truck
The tow truck driver, a 57-year-old man, was taken unconscious to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, where he subsequently died, said the police and Singapore Civil Defence Force.
The police added that the 33-year-old man did not render assistance to the tow truck driver and fled the scene immediately after the accident.
He also did not report the accident to the police within 24 hours.
The man’s driving licence has been suspended with immediate effect, they added.
He will be charged with dangerous driving causing death, failing to stop after an accident, failing to report the accident and failing to render assistance.
In a video of the accident posted on Facebook page Singapore Roads Accident.com, a tow truck can be seen at the junction with a crack on its front window and debris scattered around the vehicle. Nearby is a car, with its bonnet crumpled.
If convicted, the offence of dangerous driving causing death carries a jail term of up to eight years and disqualification from driving all classes of vehicles.
Failing to stop after an accident, failing to report the accident, and failing to render assistance each carry a fine of up to $3,000, a jail term of up to 12 months or both.
Offenders may be disqualified from driving all classes of vehicles for at least 12 months.
The TP reminded motorists that if they are involved in an accident, they must stop and render assistance to the road users involved.
They added that leaving an accident scene without rendering assistance is a criminal offence.
The number of traffic accidents that led to fatalities increased by 6.1 per cent, from
131 cases in 2023 to 139 cases, in 2024, according to figures released by the police on Feb 21. The number of fatalities increased by 4.4 per cent, from 136 persons in 2023 to 142 persons in 2024.
