SINGAPORE – Personnel from the Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Home Affairs will see their life insurance and personal injury coverage increase from $300,000 to $350,000 from Nov 1.

The change will benefit about 500,000 personnel, comprising all full-time national servicemen as well as eligible operationally ready national servicemen, regulars and volunteers, said the two ministries in a joint statement on Oct 31.

Introduced in 2016, the group insurance scheme, consisting of the group term life and group personal accident insurance policies,

initially covered the ministries’ personnel to the tune of

$150,000 per policy

.

The initiative was one of 30 recommendations made by the Committee to Strengthen National Service to better recognise the contributions of national servicemen, and to strengthen care for them, said information from a fact sheet published then.

On Jan 1, 2023,

the amounts were

doubled

, with a broader personal injury policy replacing the personal accident one.

“Insured individuals who wish to increase their coverage or insure their dependants can purchase additional coverage from the appointed insurance company, Singlife,” said the ministries.

According to Singlife’s website, the maximum coverage for both policies is capped at $1 million each.
