SINGAPORE – JTC Corporation will have a new chairman come July 1.
In a media statement on April 17, the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) said Mr Chia Song Hwee will take over from Mr Tan Chong Meng in the role at the statutory board in charge of Singapore’s industrial progress.
Mr Chia, who is currently the deputy chief executive at Temasek International, will be appointed chairman-designate of JTC from May 1 before assuming the role of chairman on July 1.
Prior to his stint at Temasek, he was the chief operating officer at GlobalFoundries, which had been integrated with Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing.
Before the integration, Mr Chia also served as director of the board, and president and CEO of Chartered.
In addition, he also once served as the regional controller for Asia, Australia and Middle East of the drilling division of the Schlumberger group.
Mr Chia is currently a member of the Economic Development Board’s International Advisory Council, and the National Financial Regulatory Administration of China, as well as a board member of the National Research Foundation.
Mr Tan will officially step down as JTC chairman on June 30.
He joined JTC in April 2019 and steered the agency through the challenges of Covid-19 and played a pivotal role in the transformation of JTC into a forward-looking industrial master planner and developer in support of Singapore’s economic agenda.

During Mr Tan’s time as chairman, JTC embarked on the development of smart new-generation estates that fostered vibrant and innovative ecosystems, and embedded sustainability as a core principle in all its industrial undertakings.
The new-generation estates include the 600ha Jurong Innovation District,
MTI said that Mr Tan was also instrumental in driving industry transformation and the optimisation of industrial land use, where he oversaw the completion of nearly one million sq m of new-generation high-rise industrial developments to drive productivity improvements.
One example is the Kranji Built Environment Hub, which enables land-intensive construction-related companies to redesign their processes for operational efficiency.
MTI Permanent Secretary Beh Swan Gin expressed his appreciation for Mr Tan’s leadership and contributions to JTC. Welcoming Mr Chia, Dr Beh said: “I am confident that Song Hwee will build on the excellent work of Chong Meng and steer JTC to new heights.”
