SINGAPORE – Upcoming financial support to help retrenched workers cover daily needs while upskilling for better jobs should be paid on top of severance packages that serve a different purpose, said labour MP Patrick Tay.

The assistant secretary-general of the National Trades Union Congress said companies make severance payments to compensate workers for loss of employment, show appreciation for past contributions and ease their financial burden as they look for new jobs.
