SINGAPORE – The Straits Times is organising a forum on Nov 12 that looks at the impact of the US presidential election and the changing face of South-east Asia’s youth.
Minister for Transport and Second Minister for Finance Chee Hong Tat will discuss geopolitics in a fireside chat with ST editor Jaime Ho at the event.
Mr Luhut Pandjaitan, Indonesia’s newly appointed chairman of the National Economic Council and special envoy on investment of the president, will make a special address.
He was until recently Indonesia’s coordinating minister for maritime affairs and investment and a powerful focal point of the previous Joko Widodo presidency.
Organised under the umbrella of SPH Media’s Asia Future Summit 2024, the ST forum is the third and last edition of the series after editions by Lianhe Zaobao and The Business Times earlier this year.
The year 2024 has been marked by major elections across the world, from Indonesia to India, and will be capped by the US election on Nov 5
“It’s been an extraordinary year of upheaval. From wars to elections, continued economic transformation and geopolitical re-alignments, flux has become the new normal,” said Mr Ho.
“We hope that this special Asia Future Summit, together with our original reporting, can help our readers and stakeholders make better sense of 2024 and the road ahead,” he added.
The forum will open with the fireside chat with Mr Chee, followed by a panel to discuss the US election and what the result could mean for the US, China and the rest of the world.
Moderated by ST’s Japan correspondent Walter Sim, the panel’s speakers are Ms Selena Ling, chief economist and head of global markets research and strategy at OCBC; Professor Chen Dingding from Jinan University; Mr Blake Berger, a consultant for the New York-based think-tank Asia Society Policy Institute; and Ms Bhagyashree Garekar, ST’s US bureau chief.
Another topic to be discussed at the forum is South-east Asia’s youth and how their votes and vitality will shape the politics and economies of the region.
ST associate foreign editor Lim Ai Leen will moderate this panel, which will feature speakers such as Dr Shashi Jayakumar, founder of risk consultancy firm SJK Geostrategic Advisory, as well as ST’s Indochina bureau chief Tan Hui Yee and Malaysia bureau chief Shannon Teoh.
Around 200 delegates, including thought leaders and senior representatives from the public and private sectors, are expected to attend the forum at the Andaz Singapore hotel in Bugis.
The event is supported by OCBC and OCBC Premier Banking as the presenting sponsor.
