Back in the 1990s when Mr Chee Hong Tat was studying engineering at the University of California, Berkeley on a Singapore government scholarship, he did a “naughty thing”, he says.
Students at US colleges are allowed to take courses outside their area of study, so he took classes in economics and found that he enjoyed them.
