A debate over a debate broke out in Parliament yesterday, as Workers' Party (WP) chairman Sylvia Lim explained a comment she made last week when she sparred with Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat over a tax hike.

Palpable anticipation reigned for 22 minutes, as it was not clear where things were headed. Would Ms Lim retract her words and apologise, as was demanded of her? And if she would not, how hard was the Government prepared to push her?
