111 nabbed, over $88k worth of drugs seized

The Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) has arrested 111 suspected drug offenders and seized drugs worth more than $88,000 in multiple operations throughout Singapore.

A syndicate that distributes cannabis was dismantled in one of the operations.

The drugs found include more than 2kg of cannabis, 112g of Ice, 89g of heroin, 50 Ecstasy tablets and a small amount of ketamine worth more than $88,600 in total.

The raids were conducted islandwide over 11 days from May 23 till yesterday, the CNB said.

Cigarette smuggling attempt foiled

A total of 6,500 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes were found hidden in a modified compartment at the rear end of a 12m bowser or tanker on Thursday at the Tuas checkpoint, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said yesterday.

ICA officers had directed a Malaysia-registered truck with the bitumen bowser to undergo checks, after noticing anomalies in the scanned image of the bowser.

The truck was driven by a 37-year-old Malaysian man.

The potential duty and goods and services tax evaded amounted to about $504,400 and $50,778 respectively.

The man, contraband cigarettes and vehicle were handed to the Singapore Customs for investigations.

Fire breaks out at Simsville condo

A fire broke out at Simsville condominium yesterday.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the fire at 6, Geylang East Avenue 2 at around 12.20pm.

The fire involved the contents of a bedroom on the 10th floor, SCDF said. It was put out by firefighters with one water jet within 20 minutes.

About 80 residents were evacuated by SCDF and police officers. There were no reported injuries.
