Eng Aik Meng is the former president of APL – one of the world's largest container shipping companies. He is now head of TE Asia Healthcare, which invests in standalone medical centres and integrated healthcare facilities throughout Asia.

Mr Eng Aik Meng remembers the day he turned up at National Junior College (NJC) with his father more than three decades ago to register his admission.

The vice-principal took a look at the Johor boy's impressive SPM results - the Malaysian equivalent of the O levels - and declared authoritatively: "You do science and double maths."
