SINGAPORE – Two veteran healthcare leaders will helm Eastern General Hospital (EGH), which is due to open between 2029 and 2030 in Bedok North.
From Jan 1, 2025, Associate Professor Gan Wee Hoe will be appointed pro-tem chief executive and Associate Professor Augustine Tee will be appointed pro-tem medical board chairman, said SingHealth on Nov 27.
Prof Gan will continue serving as the chief executive of SingHealth Community Hospitals while Prof Tee will step down from his position as chairman of the medicine division at Changi General Hospital.
Prof Gan, an occupational physician by training, oversees the development of care delivery in SingHealth’s community hospitals.
He previously served as chief medical informatics officer at the Singapore General Hospital. When he was with the Singapore Armed Forces, he led in the organisation-wide migration of the electronic medical records system.
As pro-tem chief executive, Prof Gan will provide leadership with regard to strategies and operations of the hospital, said SingHealth.
Prof Tee has been chairman of the medicine division at Changi General Hospital for six years, with 12 medical speciality departments under his wing. He was previously chief of the respiratory and critical care medicine as well as medicine departments.
He is the Hospital Clinical Services Lead of the Eastern General Hospital planning committee, and has led the design of the hospital’s clinical care and service models.
Prof Tee will oversee the development of professional services and clinical specialities when he chairs the medical board at EGH.
The EGH campus, which is operated by SingHealth, is slated to open in Bedok North by 2030.
Eastern General Hospital will have 1,400 beds and offer inpatient and outpatient care, as well as emergency care.

The facility will be the first general hospital to deliver clinical services virtually in 2026, before its completion.
Prof Ng Wai Hoe, SingHealth’s group chief executive, said the hospital will significantly increase the capacity of Singapore’s healthcare system to meet the needs of the country’s ageing population.
He added he is confident that both newly appointed leaders will “ably lead EGH on its journey to transform care delivery and enhance clinical outcomes for patients and the community”.
