Health enthusiasts and sandwich lovers can show off their nutritional knowledge and sandwich making skills at a competition here next month.

Participants will get to create their version of a wholesome sandwich or burger within30minutes.

Their efforts will be judged based on relevance to the theme, tastiness and presentation.

Basic kitchen utensils and toasters, as well as basic ingredients, including lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, butter, cheese, salt and pepper will be provided.

Participants can bring a maximum of three of their own ingredients.

As no open-fire cooking is allowed, they can bring their own cooked hamburger patties.

All sandwiches and burgers are to be made using Sunshine's extra fine sprouted wholemeal bread and US premium potato wholemeal burger bun, which are also provided. The contest has two categories: one for children aged seven to 12 and an open category for all participants.

One of the reasons for holding the contest is to promote healthy eating. "Healthy eating has been gaining traction in the marketplace. We want to show how easy it is to prepare tasty and healthy food," said a spokesman for the contest's organising committee.

Ms Wong Lian Hwa, brand manager for Sunshine Bakeries, added that sandwiches and burgers are two very versatile meals. "We are looking forward to a variety of creative and nutritious recipes."

Participants will be assessed by a panel of three judges from The Straits Times' Mind & Body section, Lianhe Zaobao Lohas, and the contest sponsor, Sunshine Bakeries.

Participants in the children's category stand to win $500 for first place, $300 for second and $150 for third. Three finalists will receive a consolation prize of $50each.

In the open category, the first prize winner gets $800, second prize gets $500 and third-prize gets $300. There are three consolation prizes of $100 each.

The contest semi-finals will be held on July 9 and finals on July 10, both at Suntec Convention & Exhibition Centre, Halls 401-403.

Those interested can send an e-mail with their name and contact number, the category they wish to take part in and the recipe of their sandwich/burger by July 4 with
