Once when conducting a performance appraisal, I was advised not to give an employee the top grade as she had gone on maternity leave that year.
On another occasion, a former boss said women should not be promoted as they "cannot cope with power". She promoted a male staff member, who had just got married, over a better-performing female staff member.
