SINGAPORE – An Australian man is expected to be charged on Sept 26 with theft in dwelling, after he allegedly shoplifted items in the transit area of Changi Airport Terminal 2.

The 45-year-old was arrested on the evening of Sept 2, said the police in a statement on Sept 25.

A pair of sunglasses had been reported missing from a shop in the transit area, the police said, adding that they were alerted to the case at about 7.40pm on the same day.

Upon discovering that a pair of sunglasses was missing from a display shelf, a retail assistant reviewed CCTV footage, which showed a man allegedly taking the product without payment, according to the statement.

Further investigations showed that the man had allegedly taken various items, worth more than $2,600 in total, from eight shops, the police said, adding that the items were recovered from him.

The items included sunglasses, bags, a water bottle, a piece of luggage, a passport case, keychains and accessories.

The man is expected to be charged on Sept 26.

Offenders should not assume that they can evade detection by attempting to leave the country quickly after committing such crimes, the police said.

In another case of shoplifting at Changi Airport,

two Italian swimmers were given a 12-month conditional warning

after they were caught by surveillance cameras taking perfumes from a store without paying in August.

The stolen items were worth about $150 and were recovered.

The two foreigners were also banned from re-entering Singapore.
