Flower power at orchid show

Gardens by the Bay has set up a new display at the Cloud Forest conservatory. Named "In a cavern, in a canyon", it is a recreated display that won Gold and Best of Show at the 22nd World Orchid Conference in Ecuador last November.

It was the first time Gardens by the Bay participated in the prestigious international event, which is held every three years and is known as the "Olympics of Orchids".

It took 10 workers and 11 days to recreate the display on-site at the Cloud Forest.

The award-winning display is part of its biannual orchid show, which showcases not only orchids that won medals at the conference, but also an array of Dendrobium orchids. Dendrobium is one of the largest genera in the orchid family, with more than 1,000 species occurring from Asia to Tahiti. These orchids come in myriad shapes and colours, some with interesting medicinal and culinary uses.

The display will be open to the public from March 9 to the end of May, from 9am to 9pm daily. An admission charge to the Cloud Forest applies.
