SINGAPORE - A fire broke out at Golden Mile Complex on Sunday (Dec 20) morning, causing the building to be evacuated.

The fire involved discarded items at the staircase landing on the second floor of the Beach Road mall, said the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) which was alerted to the incident at about 7am.

No one was injured.

The owner of a provision shop at the mall told Shin Min Daily News that he was evacuated from the building by SCDF officers when he turned up for work at about 7am.

The man said the building was engulfed by thick smoke. There were few people in the mall at the time of the fire because many shops were still closed.

Another eye-witness said he heard the fire alarm and saw thick smoke coming from the staircase landing on the second floor. He works for a travel agency on the first floor which is near the staircase landing, he told Lianhe Wanbao.

He added that about 20 people, who were about to board a coach parked near the staircase landing, were evacuated.
