SINGAPORE – Overnight thunderstorms across many areas of Singapore contributed to the lower-than-expected temperatures recorded in the early hours of Aug 28, the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS) said.

A temperature of 22.3 deg C was recorded at about 3am in Admiralty on Aug 28. Other areas, such as Pasir Panjang and Ang Mo Kio, also registered temperatures below 24 deg C at around the same time.

“During the south-west monsoon months, nights tend to be warm and humid, as the winds generally blow from the sea areas,” MSS said on Aug 29 in response to queries from The Straits Times.

“However, thunderstorms occurred over many areas of Singapore overnight between 1.30am and 3.30am, which contributed to lower temperatures registered.”

MSS had said on Aug 16 that

short thundery showers were expected over parts of the island

for the rest of the month.

It noted on Aug 29 that downdraughts from the thunderstorms – downward-moving cold air from a thunderstorm as rain falls through the air – can result in lower temperatures.

“Low temperatures due to intense thunderstorms may occur from time to time,” it said.

MSS added that daily minimum temperatures over the next few days are expected to range between 25 deg C and 26 deg C.

The lowest temperature in 2024 so far is 21.4 deg C, recorded in Paya Lebar on July 12.

The lowest daily minimum temperature ever recorded in the month of August in Singapore is 20.2 deg C, on Aug 30, 1929. Meanwhile, the all-time lowest daily minimum temperature on record here is 19 deg C, on Feb 14, 1989.
