SINGAPORE - The purpose of a tree is straightforward, said Ms Toh Hui Ran, 28, a Singaporean who has been actively involved with turning a plot of land in rural Thailand into a forest.

She said: "Plant it, and it will remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Don't, and nothing will happen.
