The microbial world - usually out of sight and out of mind for most people - has come under the spotlight lately, after a blue glow was spotted in the waters off some of Singapore's beaches.
The underwater light was emitted by marine micro-organism Noctiluca scintillans - but this is not the only tiny organism that can be found here.
