A survey of Singaporeans found that the main reason many people use plastic straws is that they come with drinks, rather than by an active choice, suggesting a significant opportunity to reduce their use, says the writer.

Earlier this week, another battle in the war against plastic waste was won when fast-food chain KFC stopped providing plastic straws and lids for drinks across its 84 outlets islandwide, preventing almost 18 tonnes of plastic from being binned per year.
KFC is the latest business to target single-use plastics, joining the likes of the Koufu foodcourt at the Singapore Management University, which went plastic straw-free earlier this year.
