Security officer jailed for hitting wife with laundry pole and threatening her with knife

SINGAPORE -Suspecting his wife of engaging in an extra-marital affair, a security officer hit her with a laundry pole, took a knife and pointed it at her abdomen.

Seval Kumar Krisnan, 35, was jailed for 10 weeks on Tuesday (Feb 13) after pleading guilty to one count each of assault and criminal intimidation.

One count of causing alarm to his wife by slashing his own left forearm with a knife was taken into consideration during sentencing.

The court heard that on Aug 1 last year, Seval attended a funeral where he consumed about 10 cans of beer.

He returned to his Serangoon Avenue 4 flat at around 11pm and got into a heated argument with his 38-year-old wife, accusing her of having an affair.

Seval demanded that she hand over her mobile phone and, out of fear, she complied.

He then retrieved the 70cm-long pole and used it to strike her inner left thigh.

Still unhappy, he went to the kitchen, picked up a knife with a 16cm-long blade and accused her of destroying his life.

Seval pointed the weapon at his wife's body and she grasped its handle in fear.

He also told the woman that she would die if he stabbed her abdomen. He later stopped making threats, and returned the knife to a kitchen drawer.

The court heard that his wife could not call for the police as her mobile phone was with him.

She also could not leave the flat as he had locked the front gate.

She finally reported the incident to the police five days later.

She also reported that Seval had threatened to harm himself with a knife on Aug 3 last year before cutting his own arm shortly afterwards.

He could have been jailed for up to two years and fined up to $5,000 for assaulting his wife.

Offenders convicted of criminal intimidation can be jailed for up to two years and fined.
