SINGAPORE – A security supervisor was at a foreign workers’ dormitory when he allegedly obtained a $29 bribe from one of its residents who purportedly had a contraband cigarette in his possession.

Tanayogaraj Nagaraji, 40, is said to have obtained the money from Mr Hasan Kamrul in exchange for not reporting the latter over the incident. Court documents did not disclose details about Mr Hasan.

On Dec 24, Tanayogaraj, who is a Malaysian, was charged with one count each of graft and unlawfully being in possession of Mr Hasan’s work pass.

Tanayogaraj is accused of committing the offences at the Avery Lodge Dormitory in Jalan Papan, near Jurong Port Road, on or around Nov 22.

He appeared in court via video link on Dec 24 and said that he would not be engaging a lawyer.

He was also offered bail of $15,000 but told District Judge Brenda Tan: “I don’t have a bailor.”

Tanayogaraj is expected to plead guilty on Jan 14, 2025.

If convicted of graft, he can be jailed for up to five years and fined up to $100,000.

If convicted of being in possession of Mr Hasan’s work pass, he can be jailed for up to two years and fined up to $20,000.
