SINGAPORE – A Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) warrant officer was at work at the Civil Defence Academy in Jalan Bahar in August 2024 when he was subjected to a routine urine test.

Rahul Tay Abdullah’s urine sample was later found to contain traces of methamphetamine and

he was suspended on Jan 21

.

Tay, 50, was sentenced to a year in jail on March 24 after he pleaded guilty to a drug consumption charge.

The offender, who is also known as Jeremy Tay Chen Wee, was a medical certification team tester with SCDF when he received a Long Service Medal in 2022.

Without revealing details, an SCDF spokesperson told The Straits Times in January that he was working in a non-front-line vocation at the time of his offence.

State Prosecuting Officer Lim Yeow Leong told the court that Tay’s urine sample tested positive for a controlled substance following the routine test on Aug 7, 2024.

He was then taken to a Central Narcotics Bureau office at the Jurong Police Divisional Headquarters where he provided two bottles of urine samples.

The samples were taken for an analysis and Health Sciences Authority officers later found that they contained traces of methamphetamine.

Tay was charged in court on Jan 13.

For drug consumption, an offender can be jailed for up to 10 years and fined up to $20,000.
