SINGAPORE – A Singaporean man who allegedly hacked into multiple FairPrice and Zalora customer accounts to make unlawful purchases was hauled to court and charged on Aug 26.

Ong Jian Zhen, 34, was handed one charge under the Computer Misuse Act for hacking into the accounts between July and November 2022.

If found guilty, he could be fined up to $5,000, jailed for up to two years, or both.

He is currently remanded for investigations, after he was deported from Thailand and arrested on Aug 25 by the police in Singapore.

Ong reportedly skipped bail after he was charged in October 2021 for cheating.

He failed to attend court hearings and a warrant of arrest was issued against him in September 2022.

In October 2022, Ong was caught by the Thai authorities and jailed in Thailand for drug-related and immigration offences.

On July 30, he was released from prison and detained at the immigration detention centre before being deported to Singapore.

Ong’s case will be heard again on Sept 2.
