SINGAPORE – A man who allegedly set bicycles alight in Yung Kuang Road in Jurong, and was caught within two hours, has been charged with committing mischief by fire.

Hamzah Hambali, 40, who appeared in a district court on April 23, is accused of committing the offence shortly before 4pm on April 21.

According to court documents, he was at a staircase landing on the 10th floor of Block 166 Yung Kuang Road that day when he allegedly set fire to two bicycles.

Police said in a statement on April 22 that officers found out about the fire soon after, and no one was injured in the incident.

A police spokesperson said that after examining footage from CCTV and police cameras, the authorities managed to establish the alleged offender’s identity and arrested him within two hours after the report was made.

Preliminary investigations revealed that he is believed to have been involved in two other similar cases of mischief by fire in Yung Loh Road nearby.

Hamzah’s case will be mentioned again in court on April 30.

For committing mischief by fire, an offender can be jailed for up to seven years and fined.
