Man jailed 8 weeks for taking upskirt videos on MRT escalators

SINGAPORE - A network engineer who took upskirt videos of women at MRT escalators on five separate occasions was jailed for eight weeks on Monday (Feb 12).

Mohammad Zaque Mohammad Ali, 43, pleaded guilty to three charges of insulting the modesty of women between November 2016 and Jan 11, 2017. Two other charges were taken into consideration for his sentencing.

The court heard that on Jan 11 last year, a woman got off a train at Paya Lebar MRT station at about 9.40pm and took the escalator up. Mohammad Zaque stood directly behind her.

When the woman reached the higher level, another woman alerted her that Mohammad Zaque, who had been standing behind her, had been taking upskirt videos of her. The victim confronted Mohammad Zaque and sought help from the passenger service centre.

Mohammad Zaque admitted that he had used his Samsung mobile phone to intrude into the privacy of the woman.

His phone and laptop were seized for investigation. Upskirt videos of other women were found on his phone - including a female student at Tampines MRT station in November 2016, and another woman in a black dress whose video he took in January last year.

Mohammad Zaque could have been jailed for up to one year and/or fined on each charge of insulting the modesty of a woman.
