SINGAPORE – A man who allegedly assaulted an older man in a back alley in Geylang, causing him to fracture his skull and subsequently die of his injuries, was charged on Aug 22.
Zubir Mohamed, 40, was charged with one count of voluntarily causing grievous hurt to 67-year-old Sivarajoo Pitchay Pillai.
The fight happened on Aug 3 at about 2.35pm in the back alley of 669 Geylang Road, according to charge sheets.
Zubir is said to have pushed Mr Sivarajoo to the ground and punched him in the face, causing him to suffer a skull fracture.
The older man was taken conscious to hospital, but died more than two weeks later on Aug 19, said police on Aug 21.
Court documents did not state how the two men were related and why they fought.
The prosecution requested that Zubir remain in remand, and sought permission to take him to the scene of the crime to collect evidence.
On Aug 8, Zubir was handed four theft charges and one charge of criminal breach of trust in other cases.
He is said to have stolen a black mountain bicycle and a lock from the void deck of Block 545 Bedok North Street 3 on June 12.
He also allegedly misappropriated a watch and a ring worth $490 in total on June 19, which another man, Mr Abdul Karim Sued, had entrusted to him.
In July, Zubir purportedly stole valuables from a car in the vicinity of Al-Ansar Mosque in Chai Chee Street, and looted vehicles in the carpark at Block 539 Bedok North Street 3.
Zubir will return to court on Aug 29. If convicted of theft, he faces a maximum jail term of three years, a fine, or both, for each charge. The offence of criminal breach of trust carries a penalty of up to seven years in jail, a fine, or both.
If convicted of voluntarily causing grievous hurt, he could be jailed for up to 10 years, and fined or caned.
