SINGAPORE – A man allegedly used a metal dumbbell handle to

assault two women, aged 30 and 82, during a broad-daylight robbery attempt

in Tampines on May 12.

On May 14, Mohamad Hairil Mohamad Salleh, 40, was in court to receive one charge of attempting to commit robbery while armed with a weapon.

He is accused of targeting the women at the ground floor lift lobby of Block 287 Tampines Street 22 shortly before 1.30pm on the day of the alleged incident.

According to the police, the Singaporean man had approached the two women and allegedly asked them to hand over their valuables.

When they did not do so, he allegedly used a metal rod to assault them. The women were injured and were conscious when taken to hospital, the police added.

Court documents and the police did not say how the women got away from their assailant or provide details of their injuries.

Using footage from police and CCTV cameras, officers identified and arrested the man.

Hairil’s case will be mentioned again in court on May 21.

If convicted of the offence, he can be jailed between five and 20 years, and receive at least 12 strokes of the cane.
