SINGAPORE - Police have arrested a 59-year-old man suspected to have cheated a woman of more than $54,000.

The 66-year-old woman, who filed a police report on Tuesday (Oct 13), got to know the man through social media. The suspect, who claimed he was a sailor, told the woman he would be sending his belongings to her for safe-keeping.

The woman subsequently received calls claiming that a parcel with the belongings which contained a large amount of cash was detained by the authorities of a neighbouring country.

After making several payments upon the requests of unknown callers, the woman grew suspicious and lodged a police report as she did not receive the parcel eventually.

Police arrested the suspect at Raffles Place on Thursday (Oct 15).

During the arrest and subsequent raids, the police recovered cash amounting to more than $126,000. Two mobile phones were also seized for investigations.
