Jail for man who threw bags of paint at lion dance competition from 6th floor of Ngee Ann City

SINGAPORE – To earn $1,500, a man agreed to throw bags of red paint from the sixth floor of Ngee Ann City to the shopping centre’s Civic Plaza on the ground floor, where a lion dance competition was taking place at the time.
No one was injured in the incident, which took place in September 2024.
Yap Seng Hin, 34, was sentenced to six weeks’ jail on March 9 after he pleaded guilty to performing a rash act.
The Malaysian was also ordered to fork out more than $1,000 for the clean-up.
He will have to spend an additional five days behind bars if he fails to pay the amount.
It was not stated in court documents whether Yap received the $1,500 he was promised.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Mark Chia told the court that Yap had received a call from an unknown person who offered him $1,500 to perform a “job” at Ngee Ann City.
At around 8pm on Sept 6, 2024, Yap went to Newton Food Centre and boarded a van containing bags of red paint, which he was instructed to throw down to the Civic Plaza.
The court heard that the driver was unaware about Yap’s tasks that evening.
The van reached a carpark on the sixth floor of Ngee Ann City shortly before 9pm that day.
Yap went to a window and threw two bags of red paint down to an area where a lion dance competition was then taking place, DPP Chia said.
“Both bags landed near a judges’ table... (and) CCTV footage captured the bags landing.”
One of the organisers of the competition alerted the police and officers arrested Yap on Oct 15, 2024.
