SINGAPORE – A drug offender allegedly assaulted two police officers in December while he was under a remission order.
Mohd Taufik Hashim, 33, was sentenced to jail and caning in June 2020 for drug consumption. After his release in July 2023, he was placed under a remission order and had to keep himself out of trouble from July 25, 2023, to July 2, 2025.
Despite this, Taufik is said to have assaulted two policemen and spat at a third on Dec 16, 2024.
On Dec 18, he was charged with two counts of voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant and one count of using criminal force on a third.
He was also handed an unrelated charge of failing to provide a urine sample to the authorities.
If convicted and sentenced for these latest charges, he might have to spend another 199 days behind bars over the alleged breaching of the remission order.
According to court documents, Taufik was convicted of methamphetamine consumption on June 11, 2020, and sentenced to 5½ years in jail and three strokes of the cane.
On Dec 16, 2024, police officers conducting their anti-crime rounds in Clementi Avenue 3 at around 1pm spotted Taufik and checked on him.
“During the checks, suspected controlled drugs, drug paraphernalia, a pair of thread scissors and a mobile phone, which allegedly did not belong to the man, were found in his possession,” the police said in a statement.
“He refused to cooperate and turned aggressive. During the arrest, the man allegedly punched and kicked two officers. After his arrest, the man also allegedly spat at another officer.”
Separately, Taufik is also accused of failing to provide a urine sample to a Central Narcotics Bureau officer on Dec 17.
His case will be mentioned again in court on Jan 15, 2025.
For each count of assaulting a public servant, an offender can be jailed for up to seven years, fined, caned, or receive any combination of such punishments.
For using criminal force on a public servant, an offender can be jailed for up to four years and fined.
