99 drug offenders arrested in 5-day operation involving drugs worth over $52,000: CNB

SINGAPORE -They left no stone unturned as they criss-crossed the island.

During a five-day drug bust which ended yesterday morning, officers from the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) sought out traffickers and addicts at various places, including at hotels, coffee shops and rental apartments.

Suspects were questioned as the officers, working in teams, combed through luggage, plastic bags, clothes and safes for drugs and other drug-related paraphernalia, such as syringes and pipes.

In all, they arrested 99 suspected drug offenders and seized a haul of various drugs estimated to be worth more than $52,000.

The Straits Times was able to observe the officers at work on two days of the operation, which covered areas such as Ang Mo Kio, Balestier, Clementi, Geylang, Toa Payoh and Woodlands.

One of the largest hauls was made on Monday, when about $34,000 worth of drugs were recovered from a 34-year-old Singaporean man who had kept them at a hideout near Rangoon Road.

The CNB said the stash consisted of about 268g of "Ice", or methamphetamine; 89g of cannabis; 10g of ketamine; 62 Ecstasy tablets; 50 Erimin-5 tablets; 12 "yaba" tablets; and a bottle suspected to contain liquid Ecstasy. It noted that a small packet of "Ice" had been disguised as a chocolate snack.

The officers also recovered drug paraphernalia, including three digital weighing scales, and arrested a 36-year-old Singaporean man suspected to be a drug offender.

A 56-year-old Singaporean man suspected of drug trafficking was arrested on Thursday at a multi-storey carpark near Woodlands Ring Road.

About 28g of cannabis and 13g of heroin were found on him. At his residence nearby, about 451g of cannabis, 25g of heroin, two bottles of methadone and a digital weighing scale were among the items seized. The drugs were estimated to be worth $18,000.

The operation was supported by the Singapore Police Force and Health Sciences Authority.
