SINGAPORE – An accident in Hougang just past midnight on Aug 30 saw the drivers of the two cars involved arrested over drug-related offences after the Traffic Police found a crystal-like substance and e-vaporisers.

The crash happened at 12.15am near the petrol kiosk at 120 Hougang Avenue 2. Eyewitnesses said a grey Toyota slammed into a stationary Mazda car.

The impact caused the Toyota to flip onto its side.

A petrol kiosk attendant, who wanted to be known only as Mr Isa, was on duty when he heard a loud bang. The 64-year-old said he rushed over and found the Toyota driver trapped inside the vehicle.

Mr Isa pulled the driver out of the car. He said the man did not appear to have any injuries, and asked where the nearest toilet was.

A resident, who wanted to be known only as Mr Tan, said he saw a man getting out of the Mazda and running towards the nearby housing blocks after the accident.

Another resident, Mr Chew, who was nearby, said the man looked like he was trying to dispose of something.

“(My friends and I) asked if he was okay, and he said he was and just ran off,” said Mr Chew, who declined to give his full name. He added that the man reappeared at the accident scene a few minutes later.

Two Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) ambulances were parked behind the damaged vehicles when The Straits Times arrived at 1.30am. A Traffic Police car was also at the scene.

The SCDF said it assessed a person for minor injuries, and that he declined to be taken to hospital.

Things took an unexpected turn at about 1.40am as Traffic Police officers questioned the driver of the Toyota car. After a few minutes, they searched him and pulled out a plastic bag containing a crystal-like substance, believed to be a controlled drug.

The man was immediately arrested.

About 40 minutes later, the officers also arrested the driver of the Mazda, which was a rental car from Tribecar.

ST saw officers removing a cream-coloured backpack from the vehicle. Inside it were dozens of e-vaporisers. ST understands these included vapes laced with etomidate, also known as Kpods.
