SINGAPORE – A man was sentenced to 16 months’ jail on Feb 11 for using a heated metal spoon to burn his son’s right buttock and kicking his daughter’s shoulder, causing a fracture to her collarbone. He committed the offences on separate occasions, when the boy was around 11 years old and the girl was 14.
The 41-year-old man, who cannot be named due to a gag order to protect the victims’ identities, pleaded guilty in January to two counts of ill-treating a child
In earlier proceedings, Deputy Public Prosecutor Ryan Lim told the court that some time around 2019, the offender was in his Housing Board flat with his son when he became unhappy with the boy over some school-related issues.
The man then took a metal spoon and heated it on a stove.
After that, he placed the spoon on his son’s bare right buttock, causing a burn and scarring.
In another incident in June 2022, the man was unhappy with his daughter over an undisclosed matter and kicked her shoulder while she was sitting on the living room floor.
When the pain did not subside about a week later, the man and his wife took the girl to KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital.
She was found to have a fractured collarbone and was given 14 days of hospitalisation leave.
The man’s offences came to light after his son got involved in a traffic accident in August 2022.
Police officers interviewed the boy and the offender was arrested soon after.
