SINGAPORE – A construction worker died in hospital after a work-related incident in Bedok on Nov 6.

He had been repairing an automatic sliding gate at a landed home when it fell on him.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and the police said they were alerted to the incident in Jalan Pari Burong off Upper Changi Road at 4.05pm on Nov 6.

The 24-year-old man was taken unconscious to Changi General Hospital, where he subsequently died.

The police do not suspect foul play based on preliminary investigations.

In response to queries by The Straits Times, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) said that the man was troubleshooting a malfunctioning automated sliding gate when it toppled onto him.

An MOM spokesperson said: “As a general safety measure, workers should not attempt to manually lift or realign heavy gates or mechanical fixtures without mechanical assistance and proper method statements.”

It added that employers must ensure that workers are provided with the necessary training, supervision, safe work procedures and appropriate equipment to carry out repair and maintenance work safely.

The employer of the dead man is Yong Fong Autogate.

MOM is investigating the incident, and police investigations are also ongoing.

ST has contacted Yong Fong Autogate for more information.
