SINGAPORE – A new wellness space designed to help passengers combat travel lethargy has opened in the transit area of Changi Airport Terminal 2 (T2), said operator Changi Airport Group (CAG) on Feb 17.

Occupying more than 400 sq m – nearly the size of a basketball court – the wellness space, called Fit&Fun Zone, is on level three of the T2 transit area. It comprises five zones with various activities.

In the green zone, travellers can relax on six swinging pendulum chairs while taking in views of Dreamscape – a garden that combines a digital “sky” ceiling, fish and more than 20,000 plants – from above. This is meant to provide them with quiet respite from the bustling airport environment.

In the orange zone, travellers can de-stress by hitting soft punching bags and jabbing three-dimensional petal structures on a wall.

In the pink zone, they can work their muscles using pull-down levers connected to 2kg to 8kg weights, and watch the light balls in the zone change colours when the levers are pulled.

Over in the yellow zone, travellers can jump inside five trampoline pods, each ranging between 3m and 3.5m tall. The pods are fitted with sensors that play catchy music when travellers step within the spaces.

In the blue zone, users can navigate a rope maze set up in a nature-inspired “cave”. This is designed to spark curiosity and encourage exploration by visitors, said CAG.

The airport operator said it took seven months to build the wellness space, which was previously an area with game consoles.

CAG said it recognised that movement can improve people’s moods.

“The Fit&Fun Zone aims to boost travellers’ spirits through simple exercises and activities without the need for a gym or spa visit,” it added.

The launch of T2’s latest attraction follows the

reopening of the terminal

in November 2023 after 3½ years of engineering and expansion works.

The expansion project added more than 21,000 sq m – the size of about three football fields – to the terminal. T2, which can handle up to 28 million passengers yearly, is now the largest of the airport’s four terminals in terms of handling capacity.

Information technology consultant Dudley Lin, 34, said families with children may use the space more often as it is “visually and aurally appealing”.

While he would not use the space himself since he is usually well rested before flying out of Changi, Mr Lin told The Straits Times: “The intentions behind these features are excellent, as they accommodate a wide range of travellers, giving them the opportunity to relax and stretch out during long layovers.”

Ms Lau Zhau Yue, 26, who flies between Singapore and Germany at least once a year to visit her family, said she would not find the new wellness space useful, as she feels it will be used mostly as a photo spot.

The junior quality assurance manager added that as she usually catches up on sleep while awaiting her flights, she would explore the wellness space only for a short while.

While the Fit&Fun Zone is new to T2, other parts of the airport have also seen changes.

Shops have been progressively introduced to an upgraded space in the transit area of Terminal 1 since September 2024.

It features an expanded selection of food and beverage kiosks, such as Crave Nasi Lemak, A Noodle Story and The Hainan Story, a redesigned playground for families, and a new snooze lounge with views of the airport tarmac.
