SINGAPORE - A car caught fire on a road in Jurong on Monday afternoon (Jan 22), causing an entrance into the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE) to be closed.

The driver, a 30-year-old man, was later arrested for drug-related offences, the police told The Straits Times. It is unclear whether he was on drugs while driving.

Photos and videos posted on Facebook show black smoke rising from the car on fire, with sirens in the background.

Officers from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) are shown battling the fire at the scene.

The accident occurred in Jurong Canal Drive at about 3.40pm, SCDF told ST.

The fire was extinguished by SCDF using a compressed air foam backpack, and there were no injuries reported.

The incident caused the closure of the Jurong East Avenue 1 entrance into the PIE, the Land Transport Authority said in a tweet on its traffic news channel at 4.19pm.

Police investigations are ongoing.
