As a commando officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Clarence Tan Kim Peng once received an order from then Minister for Defence Goh Keng Swee to take over a hostile vessel that had arrived in Singapore from Vietnam.
That was in 1975 after the end of the Vietnam War, when a wave of boats carrying refugees entered Singapore waters to seek help.
