The body of a 60-year-old woman was found floating in the Kallang River yesterday morning, in what police have classified as an unnatural death.
A passer-by, who declined to be named, said he saw the body floating in the water while he was taking his morning walk near Block 38A, Bendemeer Road.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force was alerted at 7.11am and dispatched a fire engine and an ambulance. Its officers retrieved the body from the river, along the park connector that runs past Block 38A.
The woman, who was wearing a red checked shirt and black three-quarter-length trousers, was pronounced dead at the scene. Residents said police officers were on the scene by around 7.30am, with the body removed at around 10.10am. A pair of pink slippers was also removed from the scene.
Retiree Richard Lim, 67, was out for a morning walk when he noticed the police officers. He said there were many elderly residents in the estate, as it was a replacement site under the Selective En bloc Redevelopment Scheme which relocates residents from old Housing Board estates to be redeveloped.
Police said they are investigating.
