SINGAPORE - One person was taken to hospital for burn injuries and smoke inhalation after a fire broke out at a recycling centre in Kranji on Feb 19.
Firefighters had largely extinguished the blaze after a nearly nine-hour battle that began at about 10.30am, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said in a 7pm update on Facebook.
But operations are expected to continue through the night, it added, as some “deep-seated” pockets of fire remain.
In an earlier update at 4pm, SCDF said the structure of the building remained unstable.
Six water jets, four unmanned firefighting machines, an unmanned aerial vehicle and a combined platform ladder were deployed at the height of the operation, which was expected to be prolonged.
Unmanned equipment help minimise risk to emergency responders, said SCDF.
SCDF, which first posted about the incident at around noon, said the fire was “well alight” when it arrived and involved waste materials in a warehouse measuring about 50m by 50m.

The warehouse is located at 11 Kranji Crescent – the listed address of recycling and waste management firm Wah & Hua on its webpage. The Straits Times has sent queries to the firm.
SGSecure app users and M1, StarHub and Singtel mobile subscribers in the vicinity of the blaze received alerts to steer clear of the area.
SCDF asked members of the public to avoid nearby roads and take alternative routes instead.
This is the third reported fire at the address since 2018.
In March 2018, a fire involving waste materials broke out in the holding area of a single-storey warehouse.
It took about 70 firefighters eight hours to battle the fire.
In March 2024, 25 people were evacuated in an early morning blaze that ravaged a processing area
