SINGAPORE - There is a phone scam targeting the customers of SP Services, the utility company said on Friday (July 8).

SP Services customers have received calls informing them that their accounts are in arrears or that their electricity meters need to be changed.

They are then asked to make payment to a designated account, SP Services said.

"These calls are not from SP Services. Recipients should ignore these requests," it said in a statement.

SP Services has made a police report on the scam.

Customers with questions can contact SP Services at 1800 222 2333 or email spservices@singaporepower.com.sg.

Several high profile scam cases have been highlighted by the authorities recently.

From March to early June this year, victims of a parcel scam lost more than $4 million, police said earlier.

They were told that they had an illegal parcel overseas, and would be imprisoned if they did not pay up.

There have also been scammers impersonating as officers from the Central Narcotics Bureau and the Ministry of Manpower.

They are informed on the phone or via the WhatsApp message app that they have "cases" with the agencies and have to transfer money to resolve them.
