SINGAPORE - It all began with a research project in 2015 on using stem cells to understand and treat muscle degeneration in cancer patients, but led four scientists on a different journey.  

From human cells, they moved on to experimenting with animal cells to cultivate those that could be used in products such as chicken katsu and smoked duck breast.
