SINGAPORE – The Tampines outlet of popular Middle Eastern restaurant Abu Mubarak Mandi Rice has had its licence suspended for two weeks, following an accumulation of 12 demerit points in a year.

The demerit points were given for the sale of unclean food, and failure to keep its premises free of infestation, said the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) in a statement on Sept 3.

The branch at the NTUC Income Building at Tampines Junction has been ordered to suspend operations from Sept 3 to Sept 16. The outlet has almost 3,400 reviews on Google, with an average 4.9 rating out of a maximum of five.

The operator has another outlet in North Bridge Road.

The restaurant was also in July fined $4,700 for food safety lapses, after its patrons fell sick after consuming food from the Tampines outlet.

The Ministry of Health and SFA received reports of 12 cases of gastroenteritis in April 2023, with two people being hospitalised.

Separately, two other eateries – Good Eat’s Family Restaurant and Tong Luck – also had their licences suspended from Sept 3 to Sept 16.

Good Eat’s Family Restaurant, located at 1 Tanjong Pagar Plaza, received 12 demerit points for failure to register an assistant, and failure to keep its premises free of infestation.

Tong Luck, a food stall at 644 Hougang Avenue 8, failed to keep its premises free of infestation.

Both eateries were fined $800 each.

A licensee which accumulates 12 or more demerit points during a 12-month period may have its licence suspended for either two or four weeks, or cancelled, said SFA.

All food handlers and food hygiene officers, if any, working in the suspended premises must re-attend and pass relevant food safety courses.

“Food safety is a joint responsibility. SFA would like to remind food operators to observe good food and personal hygiene practices at all times,” the agency said.

It also advised people not to visit eateries with poor hygiene practices, but to report such outlets to SFA via its
