SINGAPORE – Some 60 people were evacuated due to a leak in an underground gas pipeline in Bugis on the evening of Feb 5.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the leak at the back alley of Oriental Chinese Restaurant at 33 Liang Seah Street at 6.45pm.

Police and SCDF evacuated people in the area as a precaution.

Firefighters used a water jet to disperse the gas, and there were no injuries, said SCDF.

Several shops in the vicinity were forced to close temporarily, and a pungent smell was in the air, reported Chinese-language newspaper Lianhe Zaobao.

Utility operator SP Group said the leaking pipeline was isolated for repair works, which are still ongoing.

Its officers were dispatched to the site when it was alerted to the leak at around 7.30pm.

Piped gas is generally harmless in an open-air environment and will dissipate quickly into the atmosphere, it added.

SP Group’s investigation into the cause of the leak is under way.
