SINGAPORE – Forty passengers on bus service 110 were safely evacuated on Oct 5 after a fire broke out in the engine compartment of the vehicle as it was travelling along the PIE.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the incident along the PIE towards Tuas, after the East Coast Park exit, at about 10.30pm.

The fire was out before SCDF officers arrived. SMRT said it was put out by the automated fire extinguisher system installed on all its buses.

Mr Vincent Gay, deputy managing director of SMRT Buses, said the bus captain stopped the bus at a safe location and alerted SMRT’s bus operations control centre.

The bus captain then transferred all 40 passengers onto another bus, he added. `

The bus was towed back to the depot.

Investigations into the cause of the fire are under way, said SCDF.

In a video of the incident, filmed from inside a passing bus, smoke can be seen rising from the back of the SMRT bus, which is stopped by the side of the road.

A group of people can be seen walking away from the vehicle.

Bus service 110 serves passengers travelling between Buangkok Interchange and Changi Airport.
