SINGAPORE - Parents signing their children up at 35 primary schools will need to face a ballot during the second phase of the Primary 1 registration exercise
The most oversubscribed was Princess Elizabeth Primary School in Bukit Batok with 142 applicants vying for 45 spots.
This is followed by Shuqun Primary School in Jurong West with 49 vacancies for 115 applicants, and Gongshang Primary School in Tampines with 84 vacancies for 196 applicants.
The three schools will be conducting balloting for children who are Singapore citizens residing within 1km of their premises.
Phase 2A of the Primary 1 registration exercise took place from 9am on July 11 to 4.30pm on July 12.
Phase 2A is reserved for children with a parent or sibling who is a former pupil, or those with a parent who is a member of the school advisory or management committee, or is a staff member.
Children from the MOE kindergartens under the primary school of their choice also qualify for this phase.
At this stage in 2023, 27 primary schools went through a ballot.
There are 181 primary schools in Singapore, with 180 up for registration in 2024.
Kranji Primary School will not be admitting pupils to Primary 1 through the registration exercise from 2024 to 2026, as it is relocating to Tengah.
The Ministry of Education said on its website on July 17 that about 78.9 per cent of schools will not be conducting balloting and have enough vacancies to admit all Phase 2A registrants.
The results will be out on July 19.
Schools doing a ballot for Singapore citizen children residing outside 2km of their locations include Nan Hua Primary School, which had 102 applicants and 73 vacancies, and West Spring Primary School, which had 59 applicants for 52 vacancies.
Three schools – Fengshan Primary, Punggol Green Primary and West Spring Primary – are oversubscribed but will not be facing a ballot.
Fengshan Primary School has 62 applicants vying for 52 spots, but it has places only for Singapore citizen children.
Punggol Green Primary School has 78 applicants trying for 70 spots but has places only for Singapore citizen children residing within 1km of the school, while West Spring has 59 applicants vying for 52 spots but has places only for Singapore citizen children residing within 2km of the school.
There will be vacancies in all schools for Phase 2B, according to MOE’s website. The number of spots will be updated on July 19.
Registration for Phase 2B starts on July 22 at 9am and ends on July 23 at 4.30pm. The results will be out on July 29.
This phase is reserved for children who have a parent who volunteered at the school or is endorsed by the church or clan directly connected with the primary school, or who is an active community leader.
Correction note: In an earlier version of the story, we said that Phase 2B registration ends on July 22 at 4.30pm. It ends on July 23 at 4.30pm. We also said that the most oversubscribed was Gongshang Primary School in Tampines, followed by Princess Elizabeth Primary School and Shuqun Primary School. It should be Princess Elizabeth Primary School first followed by Shuqun Primary School and Gongshang Primary School in Tampines. We are sorry for the errors.
