A total of 31 motorists, aged between 26 and 66, will be charged with drink-driving offences on April 24.

The 29 men and two women were arrested between January and April 2025 for failing breathalyser tests during enforcement checks by the Traffic Police.

The police on April 23 said two of the motorists face an additional charge of leaving their vehicles in a manner causing undue inconvenience to others.

The duo, aged 34 and 38, allegedly left their cars in a stationary position causing obstruction along Simei Street and Old Upper Thomson Road respectively, which could potentially endanger other road users.

“Investigations revealed that both had driven their cars after allegedly consuming alcohol, and subsequently fell asleep behind the wheel,” the police said in a statement.

This comes as the police reported an

increase in drink-driving violations and fatalities

related to that in 2024.

The number of people arrested for drink driving increased from 1,663 in 2023 to 1,778 in 2024, while the number of fatal accidents due to drink driving rose from 11 cases in 2023 to 12 cases in 2024.

The offence of driving while under the influence of alcohol carries a fine ranging from $2,000 to $10,000, or imprisonment of up to 12 months, or both. Repeat offenders may be fined up to $20,000, and jailed up to two years.

Offenders may also be disqualified from driving all classes of vehicles.

For leaving a vehicle in a manner causing undue inconvenience to others, those convicted may be fined up to $2,000, jailed for up to three months, or both. Repeat offenders risk a fine of up to $5,000, a maximum jail term of six months, or both.
