SINGAPORE – The Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) on April 2 deployed two C-130 transport aircraft to deliver humanitarian aid supplies to Myanmar, after a

7.7-magnitude earthquake rocked the country

on March 28.

The Ministry of Defence (Mindef) said on April 2 that the two aircraft transported more than nine tonnes of essential relief supplies contributed by the Asean Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Centre).

The AHA Centre is an intergovernmental organisation that aims to facilitate cooperation and coordination between Asean nations, the UN and international bodies for disaster management and emergency response in the Asean region.

The deployment was coordinated by the Changi Regional Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Coordination Centre (Changi RHCC).

Its director, Colonel Fredie Tan, said that Changi RHCC and the Singapore Armed Forces remain committed to supporting regional humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations, and to providing essential humanitarian assistance to the people of Myanmar.

“We will continue to work closely with intergovernmental organisations such as the AHA Centre to ensure coordinated and effective responses,” he said.

The quake flattened buildings across Myanmar, killing more than 2,800 people and displacing thousands more. The death toll is expected to rise.

The Singapore Red Cross has

raised close to $1.5 million

to support relief and recovery operations in Myanmar and Thailand after the quake.
