SINGAPORE - Over the weekend (June 18 and 19), 10 Muslim families living in Block 51 Marine Terrace saw their rental homes given a fresh coat of paint by student volunteers, in time for the Hari Raya celebrations next month.
About 120 volunteers from universities and polytechnics took part in the second Raya Revamp event, organised by the Nanyang Technological University Muslim Society Yusra and Marine Parade Community Club Malay Activity Executive Committee. The students spent the past two months getting to know the residents to find out their needs.
Emeritus Senior Minister and Marine Parade GRC MP Goh Chok Tong was the guest of honour at the event on Sunday (June 19). He also visited three of the 10 households to present the families with charity baskets sponsored by private organisation Simply Islam.
Later in the evening, the volunteers joined about 120 Marine Parade residents of various races and religions in the iftar, or breaking fast event, at the void deck of Block 44 Marine Crescent, where they shared a meal of nasi briyani and traditional Malay kueh provided by the Marine Parade Constituency Office.
