SINGAPORE – A second tranche of donations raised in Singapore, totalling $1 million, has been handed to the Egyptian Red Crescent to support Palestinian families affected by the ongoing crisis in Gaza.
The funds are part of the $2.4 million raised by local charity Rahmatan Lil Alamin Foundation (RLAF) between Feb 24 and April 6, in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef), the Egyptian Red Crescent and local humanitarian partner Humanity Matters.
The sum will provide food, clean water, medical supplies, healthcare and education for affected families in Gaza, said RLAF in a statement on Sept 2.
A mock cheque for $1 million was presented by RLAF chief executive Adnan Abdul Hamid to his Egyptian Red Crescent counterpart, Dr Amal Emam, in a ceremony witnessed by Acting Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Faishal Ibrahim.
Calling the handover an “important symbol of our strong hope and solidarity with the people of Gaza”, Associate Professor Faishal said Singaporeans have contributed generously to humanitarian efforts for the embattled territory.
The contribution, he said, “reflects Singaporeans’ compassion and our collective desire to stand with those in need and for peace to prevail”.
In June, the first tranche of $1 million was handed to Unicef.
The remaining $400,000 has been disbursed to Humanity Matters, RLAF said in its statement.
Since 2023, RLAF has raised more than $15 million through four campaigns to support people in Gaza.
Most recently, it contributed to the airdrop operation
RLAF, along with other non-governmental organisations, comprising Humanity Matters, Caritas Humanitarian Aid and Relief Initiatives Singapore, as well as Mercy Relief, had provided food supplies.
Despite more food aid entering Gaza, however, the head of the World Food Programme said in end-August that the amount is insufficient to stave off widespread starvation
The UN officially declared a famine in Gaza on Aug 22
